RECYCLING GUIDELINES
PLASTICS
Acceptable Material in Yellow Bins
Plastic containers with a 1 or 2 printed on the bottom to include milk,
soda and juice jugs, syrup and salad dressing bottles, white or
colored laundry, liquid soap and shampoo bottles. Paper labels on
containers are acceptable. Lids should be placed in trash.
What is NOT Acceptable in Yellow Bins
Plastic containers with a number other than 1 or 2 on the bottom
Plastic coated paper beverage cartons including milk and juice containers
Plastic toys, flower pots, buckets, chairs
Styrofoam, plastic bags
Motor oil, anti-freeze, chemical containers
Preparation
All bottles and containers should be rinsed clean with their caps
removed and placed in the trash.
All unacceptable itmes should be placed in the trash.
METAL CONTAINERS
Acceptable Material in Yellow Bins
All sizes of steel, aluminum and tin plated food and beverage
cans, aluminum foil and food trays free of food.
What is NOT Acceptable in Yellow Bins
Wire coat hangers or wire
Scrap metal
Bicycle parts
Pots and pans
Any containers that previously contained hazardous chemicals.
Preparation
All cans must be rinsed and free of food. Labels do not have to
be removed. Lids should be placed in trash. All unacceptable items
should be placed in the trash.
GLASS CONTAINERS
Acceptable Material in Yellow Bins
Transparent and translucent food and beverage bottles and jars.(clear,
green, brown)
What is NOT Acceptable in Yellow Bins
Light bulbs
Broken glass, window/plate glass
Ceramics
Drinking glasses
Preparation
All bottles and jars must be rinsed and free of food. Labels do not
have to be removed. Lids should be placed in the trash. All unacceptable
items should be placed in the trash.
NEWSPAPER & PAPER RECYCLING
Newspaper
Newspapers and the glossy inserts can be recycled. Telephone books
may be placed in a bag with newspapers.
Preparation
Newspapers and glossy inserts shall be placed in brown grocery bags
and placed inside a yellow bin. Do not bundle and tie newspapers.
Do not place your newspapers in plastic bags.
Magazines, envelopes (all color and sizes), letterhead, computer
paper, looseleaf or copy paper (all colors) and junk mail is recycled.
Preparation
These items shall be commingled and placed in a brown paper grocery
bag and placed inside yellow bin next to bag of newspapers. Do not
place your paper for recycling in plastic bags.
Paper Products that are NOT Acceptable for Recycling
Carbon paper
Wrapping paper
Spiral notebooks, plastic or metal fasteners (staples okay)
Glossy fax paper
Used paper plates, paper cups, used tissue paper/napkins
Wet paper
Soiled newspapers
Please be sure to keep your recycled paper clean and dry.
CARDBOARD
Acceptable material
3 Layer corrugated cardboard only.
Preparation
Shall be flattened and cut down to pieces no larger than 3ft. x 2ft. wide.
Do not tie in bundles. Cardboard must be clean and dry to be recycled.
Wet cardboard should be placed in the household trash.
Cardboard Products that are NOT Acceptable for Recycling
Plastic or wax coated cardboard milk and juice containers
Ice cream or frozen yogurt cartons
Drink boxes
Thin one layer cardboard such as cereal boxes or tissue boxes.
BATTERIES
BATTERY RECYCLING ALERT
ALKALINE batteries no longer contain mercury.
DO NOT RECYCLE
(These batteries include A, AA, AAA, C, D, 9 volt and 6 volt, lantern-type.) These alkaline batteries can be discarded in
the regular trash.
The Town of New Scotland WILL ACCEPT
- Nickel Cadmium (Rechargeables)
- Zinc-air and Zinc-carbon
- Lithium and Lithium Ion
- Silver Oxide
- Manganese
- Button Batteries
- Sealed Lead Acid Batteries. (NO Vehicle lead acid)
FYI: Rechargeables, Lithium Ion and Sealed Lead Acid are also accepted at Radio Shack in Delmar.

MEDICAL WASTE
Hypodermic needles shall be placed in a sealed container and thrown
away with the regular trash.
FLOURESCENT LIGHT BULB DISPOSAL
Flourescent light bulbs and tubes are a hazardous waste and should NOT
be placed in your household trash or recycling bins. Flourescent bulbs
should be packaged in their original containers if possible and
brought to the Highway Garage Monday-Friday between the hours
of 7:00am and 3:30pm.
HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS WASTE
The Town of New Scotland participates with the Town of Bethlehem in the Spring of each year.
Town Residents must sign up by calling Pat Geurtze at 475-0385. An entrance pass will be mailed to residents.
Electronics Recycling programs are held twice each year. Please call Pat Geurtze @ 475-0385 for more details.
